monthly newsletters

In an effort to lower the cost of printing and mailing over 900 newsletters, Prairie Quilters New is now offered online. There are two main benefits to receiving the newsletter online: 1) It won’t get lost in the mail, and 2) It’s in color. As a PQG member, you can be notified by e-mail that the latest newsletter is available. Sign up for this free service by contacting the PQG newsletter editor. Please include your name, mailing address, and e-mail address in your message.

Viewing Newsletters

If you are not able to see this month’s newsletter listed on the left (and you’ve been assured that it is now available), you probably need to clean your computer’s cache of internet images. (The internet cache is where your computer stores website images so it can reload the sites quickly when you revisit them.) Instructions on how to “clean your cache” can be found here or here.

In order to view the newsletters, you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, version 5.0 or later. This program is offered free on the Adobe Reader website.

Each newsletter has color graphics and is typically twelve pages in length, so an issue may open slowly. Your connection speed and network traffic may also affect the time it takes to open a newsletter file. Please be patient, though! It’ll be worth it.

Members’ addresses and phone numbers have been removed from the online version of the Guild’s newsletter in order to preserve our members’ privacy. If you are a Guild member and need to know the phone number or address of a fellow member mentioned in the newsletter, please consult your Membership Directory or contact the membership chairperson.

The online archive to the left stores twelve months of PQG newsletters, the most recent at the top of the list. If you need a newsletter older than this, please visit the Guild Library during regular monthly meetings.

Printing Newsletters

Most of our newsletters contain at least one quilt block pattern. In order to print out the templates accurately, please follow the directions below:

  1. Open the file in Acrobat Reader
  2. Select File > Print... to open the Print dialog box
  3. Choose “Acrobat Reader” from the section header drop-down menu.
  4. In version 5 of Acrobat Reader: Uncheck the “Shrink Oversized Pages to Paper Size” option (which is checked by default), and make sure the “Enlarge Small Pages to Paper Size” is unchecked (as it is by default) while you’re at it
  5. In versions 6 & 7 of Acrobat Reader: The “Paper Scaling” dialogue box should be “None” (not “Fit to Paper” nor “Shrink Large Sizes”).
  6. Click on the Print button at the bottom of the dialog box.

2008-09 Challenge

Vintage Garden Party

What an incredible party we had at the February guild meeting! We issued a challenge, and 45 of our members rose to the challenge and turned in entries! We were blown away by the creativity in the various designs incorporating our “Vintage Garden Party” theme, as well as the use of the challenge fabrics and the vintage embellishments.

In addition to the challenge winners, the eight (8) quilts receiving the highest number of votes will be entered into the AQS (American Quilters Society) Ultimate Guild Challenge at their annual show in Knoxville, TN July 22-25, 2009. These eight quilts will be retained by the Challenge Committee following the Garden Show and all entries will be shipped as a group by our committee. For further information on this competition you can go to the AQS website. (select “Shows”, then select “Knoxville Quilt Expo”).

We are very excited about the prospect of our top eight quilts being accepted/Juried into this prestigious show. It is not only an opportunity for our guild and individual members to be recognized (We are, after all, one of the largest guilds in the country!), but if our group is a winner (1st, 2nd or 3rd Place), the winning quilts will appear in the AQS publication, American Quilter following the show.

Below is a group picture of most of the Challenge winners. To see the quilts individually, please visit the 2009 Challenge Gallery.
