 PQG Community Projects title

Small Groups & Individuals

In 2004, our members were issued a challenge to create the gift of quilts for charities or schools of their choice. In the past, individual members or small groups of members have donated lap quilts for the VA hospital as well as quilts for Harbour House, Simple House, Bethlehem House, and Urban Ministries. Numerous groups make baby quilts for St. Jo’s, St. Francis’ and Wesley’s Neo-natal clinics isolets and as artwork at the hospital. Many make or help make quilts for their church’s fundraisers; one member makes a quilt for every new baby born at her church. Another member is teaching quilting to the ladies and children of her neighborhood. A small bee teaches quilting at Victory in the Valley. Members make quilts to raise money at their children’s schools; and they make quilts to send to victims of catastrophes such as the earthquake in Turkey or the hurricane in the Bahamas. Likewise, we give quilts to the Red Cross and to injured soldiers who are not at the VA.

One member says, "When I make quilts for 'charities' or give my fabric away to be sent to the Hopi Indians or whatever, my dear quilt hubby asks me why I’m giving all my fabric away. I tell him I know I won’t get the project done for this person or that person I bought it for and I have 'plenty of fabric'. He just laughs a very good-natured laugh and says, 'Does that mean you don’t need any more fabric?' Very funny."

Grant Program

In November 2004, Prairie Quilt Guild awarded 4 grants to support education and foster a greater understanding of quilt making and quilt history. The grants awarded benefitted area elementary, middle, and high schools.

  • Jerry Ann Drinnen - Lawrence Elementary - $250.00

The Guild awards grants to teachers in all areas of study. They have grants available for upcoming semesters. If you have questions, please call Olivia Jacobs at 316-686-7643.
